Dr. Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman
(Mridangam)
Dr. Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman has by dint of superlative artistry on the art of mrudangam, earned himself a unique place as one of the greatest legends. In a career spanning 70 years till date, he has covered the entire gamut of percussive music, accompanying the greatest legends in Carnatic music & Hindustani music, playing with the best of Jazz bands and Fusion music, exclusive percussion concerts with a variety of instruments, lecture demonstrations, research on the science of design & construction of mrudangam. He has documented his unique bani through his book The Voyage of mrudangam and its high voltage art covering all facets of mrudangam playing techniques and nuances. He has been crowned with many prestigious awards including the Padma Vibhushan awarded by the President of India, the first time it is conferred on an mrudangam artiste, as a richly deserved recognition for his yeoman service to the Indian music fraternity. His father, Dr P. Kasi Viswanatha Iyer, instantly identified his percussive talents visible at the age of 3, when he played on the kanjira. He was formally initiated into gurukulavasam at the age of 5 to learn the art of mrudangam from 4 illustrious gurus, Arupathi Natesa Iyer, Tanjavur Vaidyanatha Iyer, Palghat Mani Iyer and Kumbakonan (Sakottai) Rangu Iyengar. His maiden concert was at the age of 10 in Kumbakonam. In his career spanning 70 years till date, he has performed the following: Stupendous concerts with the legends of carnatic music of yester years Jugalbandhis with renowned Hindustani music artistes (details in Annexure) Lecture demonstrations and Talavadya kutcheris with both Hindustani and Carnatic musicians throughout the world Live performances with Jazz bands and Fusion music Encouraging the current crop of talented youngsters in vocal & instrumental music Contributions: He has established unique bani (style) of his own, the Umayalpuram Sivaraman bani and trained hundreds of students in India and abroad and has bequeathed his knowledge of this great art form, techniques, nuances to these disciples to continue this tradition globally. He has pioneered the comprehensive documentation of this through his magnum opus; a 22 ½ hour, 7 pack DVD Mrudanga Chintamanih. These DVD sets include excerpts from his book, The voyage of mrudangam and its high voltage art. As a sequel to this, another 2 pack DVD Moras and Korvais that runs for 10 hours and contains 200+ compositions has been released. A significant highlight is the demonstration of his own compositions for dance (Adavus) and the pinnacle of glory for any percussionist, playing with the Rhythm box. Research: Some of the re search works include Design and construction of a fibre glass mrudangam to the percussive world Study of tonal quality and overtones of the mrudangam through investigations on the materials for black patch, various types of skins and hides in collaboration with India premier institute, Central Leather Research Institute and Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai on Stroke transcription of Carnatic music percussion instruments. These have resulted in path breaking findings as contributions to the musical fraternity. Life Mission: His name is synonymous with mrudangam and his service to this divine art is sublime and holistic. In other words, his supreme surrender to the holy mrudangam is his maha mantra, which he considers as the be all and end all of his life mission and he always prays for the bountiful blessings of Lord Nandikeshwara to him, his family and his art& artistes.
