(Mridangam)
Shri I Sivakumar, the elder son of Smt D K Pattammal started his career in Mridangam from the tender age of ten when he accompanied his mother on stage at a concert in Bombay for the prestigious Shanmukananda Fine Arts in 1951. His maiden debut concert itself fetched him a gold medallion for his outstanding performance. It was Smt DKP who identified the sensitive laya gnanam of Shri Sivakumar and put him under the tutelage of Palghat Shri Kunjumani, a very senior disciple of Mastreo Palghat Mani Iyer. It was a rare privilege to accompany one's mother on stage and to see the mother applauding, cheering and appreciating her son was a remarkable visual treat for the listeners, needless to mention the rapport between the two artistes. He had played the Mridangam along with his Guru (double Mridangam) on several occasions for Smt D K Pattammal. DKP always used to recollect fond memories of baby Sivakumar bursting into tears when she sang melancholic or sober raga alapanas and go into raptures beating all the tables and benches listening to a fast number. A very simple unassuming I Sivakumar whose ears have been-attuned to the pure music of his mother would follow all the kritis rendered like a shadow in a concert thereby not disturbing the mood of the song. It is an unknown secret that he is endowed with a felicitous voice and can sing a full fledged concert. His chaste Tanjore style of playing, accuracy in laya and intricate laya pattern and adherence to tradition needs a special mention. He toured with DKP to Sri Lanka in 1963 and 1981, France in 1977, the Berlin Music Festival, Germany and USA. He is an accomplished senior artiste and a fine musician in his own right with his continuing career spanning for more than six decades. Apart from his distinguished mother he has played Mridangam for his illustrious uncle Sangeetha Kalanidhi Shri D K Jayaraman, his wife and daughter of the one and only Shri Palghat Mani Iyer 'Innisai Kala Ratna' Smt Lalitha, daughters Smt Gayathri Sundararaman and Dr Nithyasree Mahadevan, the ever versatile musician and the budding star to continue with the DKP legacy 'Tamizh Isai Kuyil' Ms Layanya Sundararaman. How many in this world will be blessed with such a rare honor!
