At age 3 he would recognize over 50 ragas.  Growing up in Bengaluru, he began with the harmonium, at age six, reprising what his mother, Chitra Bilvam, sang, and playing in neighbourhood bhajan sessions.  

Started learning violin at age 8 (2002) initially from Late Sri. RR Keshavamurthy and later from Kalaimamani Kumari A Kanyakumari

At age 10, he developed the capability of writing the swara notations which helped him learn and execute at a faster pace with perfection.

Sri. B. Vittal Rangan performed his first solo at age 13. Vittal deftly sandwiched school between violin sessions during Grades 10­12 too, fitting in 3­4 hours of daily practice. He passed all his Chartered Accountancy examinations in
the first attempt and has been employed since. 

He has a good sense of rhythm (Tala) which helps him grasp the swara korvais and reproduce them with ease while he accompanie
