Smt. Umasubramaniam is one of the widely recognized senior disciples of Sangeetha Kalanidhi Smt. R. Vedavalli.

She had early education in music from her learned mother. Later she had strong foundation under the able guidance of Vidwan Thiruvengadu A.Jayaraman.

She obtained Vidwan Diploma from Govt. Music College, Madras in 1978. She was the recipient of central Govt. scholarship, several awards from premier institutions like Music Academy, Indian Fine Arts Society, Krishna Gana Sabha and she was also a prizewinner of the AIR (National level) music competition in 1975. She has been performing as A grade artiste in AIR since 1985. 

So far, Mrs. Uma has performed more than 100 concerts in AIR, Doordarshan and other satellite channels.
In the year 2000 she had been to Singapore on a teaching assignment and also gave performance in Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society .
Mrs. Uma also received the title GanaSeva Ratnam
